A scientific discovery is usually the work of a group of specialists working in a highly specific area. Turning it into a therapy is a multidisciplinary task requiring know-how that the researchers themselves often do not have. For example, a discovery in molecular biology may result in a new target therapy, but validating and developing this may involve clinicians with knowledge of the disease, bioinformatics specialists, medical and analytical chemists, toxicologists, pharmacologists and others. The development strategy must also take account of regulatory, financial, human resources and other constraints. |
